We’ll see about the SAG’s since they’re tomorrow night. Speaking of “happy endings”, I’m assuming the gay teen comedy directed by Greg Berlanti will have a positive/happpy ending. Plus, Boy Erased should provide viewers with a positive ending since it’s based on a true story that the teen who was subjected to conversion therapy and fought it and survived it to accept his homosexuality. Even though I’m sure a person never gets over the harmful effects of whatever the fuck these religious assholes do to the individuals. Actually the Sag's are the 21st. Benny do you still watch Shameless? Ian has been involved in an s/l with teens who have been sent to Church's like that. Lol, I realized late yesterday that SAG’s aren’t until next week. Will, I do watch Shameless and I watched the first two or three episodes this season but then got behind so I just since my DVR was getting full I decided to stop the series recording and I’m just going to binge watch the rest of the season since I have HBO OD. But I did see that there was a s/l beginning about a center for GLBT youth where Trevor (Elliot Fletcher) was working. Plus, I saw the episode with Ian and Trevor having sex with the “Bears”. Lol, Shameless is so politically incorrect that the two guys were referred to as something else. It was a hilarious scene!

I loved Nat Wolff in Paper Towns! Plus, he’s the son of Polly Draper (Ellen) from my favorite TV show of all time thirtysomething! I'm so glad he wasn't cast as Peter Parker! He'd make a lot of money, sure but now he's positioned to be a great actor and have a long and enduring career. I'm sure he'll get a big budget something, but I'd rather see him be able to showcase his talent and range. Superhero movies have become tiresome, even though I think Tom Holland is terrific. I do worry that if Timothee wins the Oscar he might peak too early like Adrian Brody but so far he seems to have really smart people behind him choosing great projects. As for the Woody Allen thing, young actors aren't really in a position to turn down prestige projects by famous directors. That's how you get labeled difficult. I feel the same way about Greta Gerwig. When she worked with Woody Allen, she wasn't in the position to be turning him down either. Now, they both are but that's simply because Ladybird and CMBYN are doing so well and because the culture has changed. On a different note, Armie Hammer is going to be playing Batman since Ben Affleck vacated the part. Oh, Armie Hammer. If this year has proved anything it's that you're good in little indie films. His track record in blockbusters hasn't been good.
I read Leonardo DiCaprio has turned down every offer for every superhero role. His Titanic money let him do that. Speaking of which, I do hope both Timothee and Armie got backend $$ deals for CMBYN because they probably weren't paid much upfront. I also read casting Hammer is the only thing that got the film funded in the first place.

Oh, James Ivory! You just love full frontal male nudity, and who doesn't? Again, I haven't seen either Chalamet or Hammer naked, but given the way things are and especially since Chalamet is half-French, I'm going with it might not have worked with the heavy emphasis on the Jewishness of the characters. I've said this before, but it remains a point. Interesting, I also thought Ivory's script deemphasized just how much the fact that Oliver is Jewish draws Elio to him. In the book, the fact that they look alike naked is mentioned more than once as a point of attraction. Also alluded to in the film but I think is all over the book is Elio as a stand-in for the mythological character of Narcissus. It's not a perfect analogy and Elio is far more likable than that the myth but: In the myth, Narcissus breaks the hearts of nymphs and rejects all male suitors (which Elio does before Oliver). Narcissus's father is a River God, and there is a River near the villa, and there is also a pool, and Elio (like in the film) looks upon Oliver while he's in the pool like a reflection. The doors between the boys' room in the book are set up like mirrors in time, with Oliver seeing his younger self and Elio seeing his older self. Narcissus waits by the pool for his love as the world freezes around him. Also, I think the little girl that Oliver loves is a stand-in in for Echo. It's not clear if Oliver loves her because she's an echo of Elio or the other way around, but they are both frail, gifted child/adults who fall in love with Oliver. (None of that is in the movie, which is probably good because it would read very strange to have Armie Hammer staring at a ten year old girl.) I read the last chapter of the book as the little girl and Eilo being Echoes of each other in Oliver's mind and he has entwined them. Also, the book over and over points out that Elio wants to inhabit Oliver's body, and since Oliver is Elio's future self in some regards. Since the girl is not in the film, and because all of this imagery is very odd if you aren't seeing the mythological symbolism - I think they are going to have to radically change the book narrative for a sequel. *** Interesting gossip from my friend who is in the academy and is in a couple of online groups with voting members. Timothee's buzz and the fact that so many people are wanting to vote for him as Best Actor is causing some resentment. He would be the youngest actor to ever win, and people resent that. There's a strong belief that it was the "people" of one of his competitors that obtained his contract with the Woody Allen film and released it to the press to make him look like a liar. Me? Trying to use me too against a young actor in an awards season shiv is pretty low. I hope it won't hurt him. Although, I also hope he doesn't peak too early.

I hate to be the "in-the book.." a-hole but here we are. LOL. Sorry. That's annoying. The film totally stands on its own as its own thing, but I'm totally sure Luca saw the Narcissus/Reflection imagery in the book as he uses it. After all, it's kind of in the title. Just check out the use of the mirror in the scene where they meet, with the father saying both their names as Oliver's back is reflected in the mirror, blocking Elio entirely. That said, I'm glad he didn't go heavy handed and cast two actors that look alike as they are described in the book. It would be too much in the visual medium.

Oscar Noms - Luca and Armie were robbed for Best Director and Best Supporting Actor. Armie's performance has really grown on me since I saw the film and I've seen people really react well to a lot of his subtle expressions, and he really brings a lot to a role that could have turned out very harsh. Obviously, the whole film really belongs to Luca because it's his direction. CMBYN is a far better film than The Shape of Water, but The Shape of Water is flashier.
I think Mystery of Love and James Ivory's screenplay will probably win.
I am glad DK of Get Out was nominated but I think he'll split the vote with Timothee - two young newcomers in a competitive category. I know two people in the academy, they are both voting for Timothee though.

I think Timothy really deserves it but it looks like this is Oldman's year based on all his other wins. I've seen The Shape of Water and I liked it but it was a little to weird for me. Strangest love story I've ever seen. It's looking like a toss up between it and 3 Billboards...for Best Picture. I haven't seen 3 Billboards... yet but I hope to see it soon.

Luca deserved the best director nod more than (sorry Benny) James Ivory did for adapted screenplay. Yes, some stuff was cut from the book and streamlined, but nearly all the dialogue and all the major set pieces save a few scenes were from the book. James Ivory basically cut stuff that was either too out there because it was symbolic (the little girl, the androgynous hotel clerk) or too expensive. I think they were smart choices and made the film more accessible but it's still Aciman's story, but I also feel like Luca had a huge hand in some of those choices. The Shape of Water was strange and meant to be a fairy tale for adults, and I think it worked but I thought Vicky Krieps deserved the actress nomination more than Sally Hawkins. She held the screen with Daniel Day Lewis, did just as much acting and she gets snubbed. I will cut a bitch if Sufjan Stevens doesn't in best song.

I was shocked that Jordan Peele got a directing nod over Luca Guadagnino and angry that Woody Harrelson got a supporting nod over Armie Hammer. I’ve talked to people about Get Out (it’s available on OD so I may watch it this weekend) but every one of them has said the movie is not Oscar worthy. What I’m really pissed about is the James Franco snub over the silly accusations of these women. I watched two of the women on GMA this morning and they were laughable. One was from his sex scenes acting class and the other the former girlfriend who said he tried to force her to give him oral sex in a car. These women should be made to sit in the courtroom of the monster in Michigan and listen to the stories of TRUE sexual assault victims. Back to CMBYN and the Oscars, I think Ivory has the best shot at winning for adapted screenplay because the category is not strong and his name. I would love for Sufjan Stevens to win but I fear a Disney song will probably take the award. Plus Diane Warren is nominated - she’s like the Meryl Streep of Best Song Oscars.

Get Out was good and it was an important movie given it's subject buy It is in no way an Oscar worthy movie. I saw the Disaster Artist and Franco deserved a nomination. I read what the woman from his acting class said and found it laughable. He add sex scenes to the scripts. Yeah it was a class on sex scenes. And she went on to have a sexual relationship with him. Some of the things I've heard women say this all started has made me sick to hear what some went through and it's just horrible. But some like this just sound like a woman who regrets getting involved with someone and now because of the movement want to cry sexual misconduct. And the one about Aziz Ansari was so crazy. I mean the guy sounds weird and I can see why the woman didn't like what he was doing but all she had to do was leave. I think some of these women are hurting the movement. Sorry if what I said offends anyone. Just my opinion.
